Seiko began in 1881, under the name Seikosha and the company’s factory produced wall clocks, and made its first pocket watch in 1895. The first Seiko wrist watches were made in the year 1924, they became a resounding success and by 1938, demand for the timepieces pushed yearly production to well over one million watches. Seiko remains a top watch seller in Japan and all over the world. Over the years there have been much modern advancement to the world of watches but throughout the changing times, Seiko has remained a powerhouse in the timepiece industry and they have served as the official timer for various athletic competitions and events.
SEIKO has launched many epoch-making products in the world and in different years. They are: 1969 – Seiko Astron, world’s first quartz watches was made, 1973 – World’s first LCD quartz watches with six-digit digital display 1975 – world’s first multi function digital watch 1978 – First very-fine adjusted ultra-accurate Twin Quartz watch 1982 – First TV watch 1983 – First watch with sound-recording functions 1988 – World’s first automatic power generating quartz watch, 1990 – First computerized diver’s watch 1998 – Perpetual calendar watch driven by world’s first ultrasonic micrometer – Seiko Thermic, first watch driven by body heat 1999 – First “Spring Drive” watches 2005 – World’s first 3-band radio wave controlled watch 2006 – First watch with electrophoresis display module 2007 – World’s first Spring Drive Chronograph to measure elapsed time in glide motion. 2008 – First watch ever designed specifically for a space walk.
Seiko has been recognized with many awards presented to them by their industry’s leading authorities. Some of these awards include watch of the award of Horloges Magazines which was presented to them in 2008, Design award of Watch Time Magazine which was presented to them in the year 2006, watch of the year of TimeZone.com in 2005 among others.
