To Connect or not to Connect…that is the Question!

The 21st century will probably be remembered for the myriad of technologies that were created for us to stay connected with each other.

Whether we’re in the office, at home, in the car, on holiday, at the beach, on a plane or even on the toilet, there’s now no need to ever be disconnected from the rest of the world!

Wow!!!

I still remember my first mobile phone back in 1987. It cost me $5500 and what a novelty it was to be able to talk to someone whilst you were in your car. Of course in those days, you still needed an antenna mounted on the car for really good reception.

Now, a mobile phone in your pocket, handbag or briefcase will ring without a blink.

That first mobile phone provided me with the ability to be contactable anywhere! I remember being in a public toilet when my phone rang silently. I answered “Hello!” and a voice came back from under the next cubicle, “Hello?…”

That’s when I realised that whilst this new technology was a great enabler, it wasn’t always necessary to be contactable every minute of every day.

When it comes to knowing when to have your mobile on, it’s easy to judge what’s socially acceptable – have you ever been in a cinema when your mobile goes off in the middle of the movie? No doubt you’ll remember to put it on silent next time!

But when it comes to knowing what’s best for us, we sometimes forget that it’s okay to be disconnected for a short while…

  • Do you really need to have your mobile on during a massage?
  • Is it really necessary to have your emails forwarded to your mobile on weekends?
  • Does Facebook always have to be an open page on your computer?

The reality is that staying connected at all times can get addictive and if we don’t keep it under control, we end up overloading with information. The constant emails, SMS’s, phone calls, peeks and pokes, etc, end up filling our lives and minds.

High tech communication devices were created to empower us. But the question has to be asked. Are we the ones still in control or have we become slaves to these devices?!

There’s no doubt that these technologies have empowered us. But sometimes we might need to remind ourselves that real empowerment comes in knowing…when to switch off!
