Has anyone here tried getting towed over a lake by an electric toy boat?

I’m trying to find ways of powering a sea kayak for commuting over Otago Harbour.
As a boy, I once had myself towed across a lake in an inflatable by a radio-controlled model ship with an electric AC Mabuchi 540 motor with a reduction gearbox and a 12V rechargeable lead battery.
It worked rather well, and I kept going for about 4 hours before the battery went flat.
Has anyone else tried stuff like this and gathered experiences hat might help me build a grown-up version of this thing?

Too late. Somebody already came up with a tow ‘boat’ for skiers. It’d be simple to buy one and attach it to your kayak.

You might also consider buying one of those hand-held sails that rollerbladers sometimes use.
