Why does my new stereo’s volume numbers go backwards when I turn it up?
My new surround sound system does DVD, radio & Aux., It is a “all in one” system and shows numbers in the LED screen menu as I turn up and down the volume. Why do the numbers go down when I turn up the volume? The numbers start at 82 or -82 and go down to zero as the volume increases. When it is at 20 (or -20), it is very, very loud. At zero, it sound louder than a supped up car stereo (really a jet engine). What happened to the 1 thru 10 volume control? Granted, we have all wanted a 1 thru 11 volume control, but what is up with the new system? It is weird to turn the stereo down and have the numbers go up. How about some help with understanding the system or db’s.

Having the volume using negative values indicates the attenuation factor of the control. The higher the negative number is, the lower the volume. The less negative, the louder the sound.
It’s just another fancy way they have come up with other then using the old 0 to 10 scale. I image the new volume controls are less noisy when turning and more precise in their operation.
