Radio Control Frequency Scanner
How can I listen to Air Traffic Control?
I have a hobby of going to my local airport and watching aircraft takeoff/land. I was wondering how I could listen aircraft frequencies without anything else. I realize I could use LiveATC.net, but I want to extend a little beyond that. I also have seen some radio scanners but I feel like I would be paying for features I don’t need. I don’t need to “scan” anything. I already know what frequencies I’d like to listen to. I also don’t need the ability to listen to frequencies beyond the civil aircraft range. (I believe its 108-174 MHz) It would be nice for it to be portable and have a 3.5mm audio port. I also have a limited experience with electronics, and might be able to build one, but I don’t know where to start.
I also have a somewhat limited price range but it’s not static.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
You still need a scanner to be able to listen to the multiple frequencies in use at the airport, ATC. And you still need to scan.
You have a list of frequencies and you need to program them all in and the let the radio scan or find the active ones and jump to that one, and then move on when each transmission is complete.
You can get a fairly inexpensive and basic model.
Any of the Uniden BC340, BC370, BC350, or BCT8 will fit the bill for base and car, or if you prefer a handheld which you can use at home, car or carry BC72, BC92, BC230.
All these will cover the aviation band. You can program each bank to be parts of the airport ie:
Bank 1 Ground Services
Bank 2 Approach
Bank 3 Departure
You will want to scan, let the scanner jump from channel to channel to check each one for activity and move on to the next if none. This way you can monitor all the channels being used.
All the above strip out the features you won’t use. Trunking, digital modes, PL/DPL, fire tone out, computer remote control, some still have computer programming ability, but most its very limited and only a couple BCT8, SC230.
All have 1/8″ head phone/speaker jacks.
