Building an rc Popsicle boat?
I have quite a few Popsicle sticks left over from a physics project and I didn’t feel like letting them go to waste. I also didn’t feel like making frames or flowers out of the sticks. I have looked on line and found nothing that could help me in building the project.
The size of the boat I had in mind is about 2 ft long, around 6 or 7 inches wide. I’m planning of making it stay together with hot glue.
I’m also curious of how it build the motor (electric) and radio controlled.
If you can help in any way, I thank you greatly.
Hmmm, this sounds like an interesting project. Time consuming and a little bit of money for what it may be worth though. But it does sound like it would be a fun build. For an electric motor you are going to need a motor of course, ESC (electronic speed controller), a receiver, transmitter, and a servo for steering. Another thing you have to keep in mind, if you plan on placing this boat in the water, is the electronics and how to keep them dry. Ebay is going to be your best bet on cheaper parts. And an RC brand by the name of Traxxas has waterproof parts. So, as far as the items I listed above, do an ebay search for a Traxxas Titan motor ($15). Traxxas XL-5 ESC ($20-$40), Traxxas receiver 2218 (when you look up the receiver some will come with the transmitter) (price anywhere from $40-$90), Traxxas Slash receiver box (waterproof box for the receiver that isn’t waterproof) ($1-$10), and Traxxas steering servo 2075 ($10-$20) These prices are approximate. If you don’t mind buying used working parts they will be a lot cheaper. But you can see how this project is going to add up $$$. And you will have to fabricate a way to steer the boat and or buy linkage to steer it which can be found on ebay as well. Then you have to consider where you are going to mount these items and how you are going to mount them. And hot glue is not going to work for that. You will need a motor mount as well, just ebay Titan motor mount ($5). But if you are in physics, I’m sure you are smart enough to figure this out. Hopefully this is enough to get you started.
