Model Airplane Scale Sizes
What is the size of a die-cast airplane model if it’s scale is 1:500?
It would depend on the size of the PROTOTYPE aircraft (the real thing).
The scale is a ratio, in this case 1 to 500: there is one in the model’s world for every 500 in the real world. It applies to feet, yards, inches, meters, centimeters, millimeters, or MILES.
SO, in the 1:500 scale world:
A Piper Cub is 22ft 5 inches long (269 inches) therefore the model would be 0.538 inches long.
An F-16 Falcon is 49 ft 5 inches long (593 inches) therefore model would be 1.186 inch long.
A Boeing 747 is 231 ft 10 inches long (2,782 inches) therefore the model would be 5.564 inches long.
Just FYI, let’s look at an F-16 Fighting Falcon in different scales. It’s 593 inches in length, so we’d divide that number by the scale to get it’s length in the scale:
1:32 scale = 18.53 inches long
1:48 scale = 12.35 inches long
1:72 scale = 8.23 inches long
1:400 scale = 1.186 inch
