Do passenger airplanes have radar?
For example, merchant maritime vessels must have at least 2 radars onboard (SOLAS rule/regulation), mostly used for anti collision purposes, during night and especially low visibility conditions.
Do civilian airplanes have radar? If so, what is it used for mostly? All models carry or only a certain group?
All airline jets do have a radar -
Strictly a weather radar – to avoid areas of precipitations and moisture -
Weather radar range is about 250 miles – or 400 kilometres -
It is not usable for collision avoidance -
Weather radar cannot detect “clear air turbulence” – just can “see” clouds -
We operate the weather radar to find our way around storm areas -
ATC radars do not “see” clouds and storms, we do, so we request turns –
With weather radar, I used to see “blips” of preceeding airplanes on track -
And also coast lines, islands or mountains if the beam is directed down -
Radar is also supposed to scare birds near the runway during takeoff -
I am certain they are effective to get the birds to fly… into your engines -
Old timers say “use radar”, others “do not use radar” to avoid bird strikes -
