Model Airplane Painting

model airplane painting
model airplanes….how do you paint them with out the brush marks?

how do you or wat do you do so when you paint a model airplane (not R/C) it does not have all of the brush marks
I use oil base paint (they told me you cant spray that)

If you have an airbrush, you can use acrylic paints, lacquer paints, or enamel to do your model. For safety purposes I recommend acrylic paint because it is easy to thin and clean (use water) and it dries rather quickly. Lacquers and enamels need a thinner which can get very messy.

Be sure to thin the paint down so that it looks to be a little thicker than whole milk.

After all painting is done, use a matte spray to make a flat top coating, or a gloss coat to make it shiny.

If you do not have an airbrush, you can still use acrylic paint. Just be sure to do three things:
1. Get soft-bristled brushes, not the stiff hard ones. Usually you will have to find a store that carries art or craft supplies.
2. Thin the paint to the consistency of whole milk -just as if you are going to airbrush.
3. Apply even coats on the plane. Be sure to not use too much paint and allow it to pool up in certain areas. Work quickly. The coats will be very thin, so it will take many coats to complete an area. Make sure the paint is COMPLETELY dry to the touch before applying the next coat. Use a hairdryer -if you have one- on low setting to dry the paint. Getting the first coat down is the toughest, the next ones will dry faster.

Last but not least, you can use spray cans. Be sure to apply in thin coats so that paint does not run or drag. It is better to apply in light coats than trying to get complete coverage in a single one.

hope that helps,

P.S. Be sure to prime the kit before painting it.
