Model RC airplanes UK?
Hi there, I’m looking to buy someone a cheapish but good quality RC airplane for a birthday. Up to £30. Ideally I’d like to buy them the full kit which they can build themselves but comes with the transmitter, battery, engine etc… Does any one know of any where online that I can buy from or a shop within the Midlands?
This man is going to be 34 so a little kiddy one will not do. Although he’s never done this before he does pick these things up very quickly.

Well, I think you may have to double your budget to get something that isn’t a toy. There are other styles available, but if he likes the idea of an electric motor glider, a friend of mine has the Easy Fly from hobbycity.com. My ffriend is an experienced flyer and he thinks it flies very well. I’ve seen one and I think it looks pretty good. I think they ship all over the world. You would also have to buy a battery, charger, and radio. If you really had to pinch the budget, maybe their Hobby King 2.4 gHz radio would work. Otherwise I’d recommend one of the Spectrum radios. Their DX5e looks like a good idea. One caveat is that I don’t know the status of 2.4 gHz in the UK. The other is that I don’t know if most people fly mode 1 or mode 2. Here in the USA, we fly mostly mode 2. This is important if he’s going to get any instruction.
The Easy Fly is a blatant imitation of the Multiplex Easy Glider, which, here at least, is more expensive. My friend says they both fly the same.
Another known good aircraft is the Wind Dragon. I suspect you can find a distributor closer to you, but it’s sold by hobby-lobby.com here in the USA, and they do international orders I guess, too. An advantage is that it’s all in one package. You should check out what frequency it uses and find out if that’s legal in the UK. Hobby Lobby also sells the Easy Glider, but since Multiplex is european, I bet you can find another source.
If, when you say “build”, you mean gluing up balsa sticks, then you’re probably going to have to assemble the radio stuff separately. I’d only be recommending kits available over here, not sure they’re available over there.
In any case, it’s a good idea for him to practice with a simulator. Good ones that are downloadable and free are: crrcsim (see the Yahoo Group of that name) and FMS. I think crrcsim flies better, at least for gliders, although the graphics aren’t great. But I”m biased as it portrays my home field and I know the guys who wrote it. Generally you can get an adapter cable to use a radio transmitter as the controls. This works better than tapping keys on your PC.
Your guy will need to be patient to pick this up. And instruction helps a lot, although my students tell me that simulators help a whole lot. And he’ll need a roomy place to fly anything this size. Might be good to find a local RC club that maintains a field. I know there are some guys from the UK at rcgroups.com. Perhaps they can help you.
