Can I bring a bayonet on an airplane?
If it is sheathed, and wrapped in bubble wrap, can it be placed in my luggage? I bought it in Germany and I am heading back to the US soon. The blade is over 17 inches (45 cm) and the whole thing is about 22 inches (56 cm) long. When I have my bags checked in am I supposed to tell them about it? Could I have a procedure to guarantee it will make it home? I don’t want to lose it!

I guess I should toss in, my state is Maryland. I do not know if the state would have an issue with it.
I probably should have said this too, but I am traveling with my mother, who is a resident alien in the US (she is a German, I was born in the US) Could this cause a hitch at customs?
I don’t think it will contravene any laws regarding the flight itself, if it’s going to go in the hold in your luggage, so I wouldn’t say you’d need to declare it particularly. However, the customs in the US may have an issue with it if that particular item is illegal at all, I don’t know the relevant laws in your state. I see no reason why the customs in Germany would confiscate it though, it’s of no concern to them and it is no danger when it’s in the hold. Lots of potentially dangerous things travel in the hold on flights.
