Model Airplane Building Tips

model airplane building tips
building a model airplane need help?

ok i want to make a model airplan out of styrofoam. but also i want to put and model rocket engine in it to make it fly. If i add weights to it to keep it balanced will it fly. what angles do the wings need to be and the tail. i am only 15 and want to get into aerospcae. any tips for me will help. i am going to base my model of a fight jet.

The main problem is that model rocket engines are high-thrust, short-burn. They’re not good for just flying along horizontally.
There are many ways to use model rocket engines for gliders and airplanes, though. The easiest is to use a carrier rocket which will drop your glider at altitude. There are also gliders with a rocket engine mounted near the nose which use the short burn-time for a steep climb (Here is a “boost glider” you can print out and build from 110 lb. cardstock).
Here is a paper on the different types of rocket gliders: www.esteseducator.com/Pdf_files/2266.pdf

If you’ve never flown model rockets, it would be helpful and fun to start with a plain rocket to learn how the engines work.

Regarding the angle of wings on the fuselage, what matters is the angle that the wings meet the airflow, which is controlled by the control surfaces (elevators on the tail) and the weight distribution. Building some glider kits from a hobby shop would be a good way to start.

P.S. There are special rocket engines for airplanes with low thrust and long burn ( http://jetex.org/).
