Balsa Model Airplane Tips

question regarding balsa wood model airplane kits?
I have been a plastic modeler for 30 plus years and I have always been interested in balsa wood display models but I’m not to familiar with some of basics. Looking at the guillows website and the products they offer I have the following questions
1. when you buy the kits do they come with an outer skin and if not what are you supposed to use to cover the bare wood framing
2. what kind of glue is used to hold them together
3. what tools will be needed to complete the kit
I imgine these kits are paintable but not knowing what the skins are made of makes it hard to know if what I have will work or not
any hints or tips would be greatly appreciated
The basic model kits from Guillows, Dare, SIG, and others are still available from Hobby shops but
not like the good ole days. I have been at it 60 years and most models were the stick & tissue
type. It is really important that you sand the completed frame to look nice. The outer skin is usually
hi-grade silkspan tissue paper made of unidirectional long fibers. It is extremely strong material.
Most manufacturers suggest white glue or the standard carpenters tan glue. Pins are necessary
to hold down parts as glue dries. To complete the kit you will need razor blades, sand paper
and rubber bands. The completed model that is framed and covered can be painted with a water-
based clear laquer. Ordinary water-based modellers paints can be used for final colors. Sand the
model between coats of paint. If careful attention to detail and construction is used the little
first time model should fly nicely.
